Martin Clunes names Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant as his favorite in the world

Actor Martin Clunes has declared Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, as his favourite dining spot not only in the region but across the globe. Clunes, celebrated for his roles in popular television series such as “Doc Martin” and “Men Behaving Badly,” shared this sentiment during a reflection on his fondness for Cornwall.

In a 2017 interview with the Independent, Clunes expressed his deep appreciation for the restaurant, highlighting his enthusiasm for the various elements that contribute to its charm. “I love the room, I love the paintings, I love getting the boat across from Rock, I love everything about it,” he remarked. He particularly praised one dish, the hot shellfish starter served on a griddle, which features a tantalizing assortment of mussels, oysters, clams, and razor clams. “I know the menu very well,” he stated, suggesting that his repeated visits have made him well-acquainted with the offerings.

Rick Stein’s establishment is a cornerstone of his culinary empire and has significantly influenced the gastronomic landscape of Padstow. In a conversation with the London Standard, Stein addressed criticism surrounding the restaurant’s popularity and its effect on local tourism. He stated that the community is generally unfazed by the influx of visitors, emphasizing that tourism is essential for the local economy. “Without tourism, what would they do anyway?” he pondered, acknowledging the challenges of rising property prices while defending the balance tourism brings to the region.

Stein’s passion for Padstow is evident, as he shared in an interview with the Telegraph that he has no plans to retire anytime soon. “I love getting people enthusiastic about eating,” he said, reflecting on his commitment to the culinary scene. Stein owns a home in Padstow, which he regards as his spiritual base.

In a separate but equally meaningful effort, Clunes, alongside his wife Philippa Braithwaite, is working to revive the historic Buckham Fair. This initiative aims to raise funds for the new emergency department at Dorset County Hospital. Philippa emphasized the importance of the hospital, stating, “We thought it would be good to reboot the fair as a one-off, specifically to raise money for the cause.” The couple’s involvement underscores their commitment to supporting local healthcare, reflecting the community spirit that both Clunes and Stein cherish in their respective endeavors.
