British tourist falls off TUI-operated cruise ship near Tenerife

A search is underway for a 76-year-old British man who fell from a cruise ship in northwest Tenerife.
Salvamento Maritimo, the Spanish maritime search and rescue agency, confirmed on Friday they had been searching for a man in the water surrounding the Marella Explorer 2 cruise ship since Thursday.
The Marella Explorer 2 is a 907-cabin ship operated by holiday company Tui.
Local authorities were notified on Thursday morning local time that a man was in the water.

“The CCS Tenerife maintains coordination under the Maritime Captaincy Management, in collaboration with Civil Guard,” Salvamento Maritimo said in a statement on Friday.
Marella Cruises said they were “deeply saddened” to confirm that a guest was seen entering the water while their ship was travelling to La Gomera.
“Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time. Our dedicated care team is supporting the family, providing assistance and comfort. We are working closely with local authorities and will continue to offer every possible support.”
