Two Town games, two penalties awarded, two Blues defeats – Meet the ref for Oxford

Matthew Donohue will be the man in the middle for Ipswich Town’s trip to Oxford tonight. Ross Halls take a closer look at the referee….
Donohue will be taking charge of his third Town match this season, having officiated both the 1-0 defeat at Preston in August and the 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough last month.

In those games he awarded penalties for and against the Blues, firstly at Deepdale when he gave the Lillywhites a penalty which saw Milutin Osmajic convert the winning goal.

He then gave Town a spot kick against Boro, but George Hirst missed his penalty for Kieran McKenna’s side, who were defeated at the Riverside Stadium.
This will be his seventh game officiating the Blues during his career, while he has refereed two Oxford fixtures previously. His latest game in charge of the U’s was their 2-1 defeat at Boro in March 2025.

Donohue has officiated in the EFL since the 2018/19 season, being appointed to the Select Group 2 list of officials in the summer of 2019.
So far this term, he has been in charge of 11 games, handing out 50 yellow cards and one red in 10 Championship fixtures and one EFL Cup tie.
Craig Taylor and Richard Woodward are due to be the assistant referees, with Stephen Martin the fourth official for the game, which is live on Sky Sports.
