Audi Crooks, Iowa State Lead Star-Packed Schedule At Coconut Hoops Classic

The Sunshine State is often a meeting point for the best of the best in women’s college basketball during the holidays, and the same can be said ahead of time as the GEICO Coconut Hoops Classic looms.
Formerly known as the Gulf Coast Showcase, one of the top holiday tournaments on the college hoops calendar is back with a new name and the same location — Alico Arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast in beautiful Fort Myers, Florida.
And once again, a stacked field likely to feature multiple ranked squads is ready to descend on the coast, with only one place you’ll be able to find the action across both event brackets all tournament long.

Women’s Coconut Hoops Team Outlooks
NOTE: Season stats accurate as of Nov. 20
Coppin State Women’s Basketball Preview
It’s a new era in Baltimore as the Eagles are led by first-year coach Darrell Mosley, who was hired on after being the associate head coach in each of the past two seasons at Arizona State. There are some recent signs of encouragement for CSU, which hasn’t won a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season or tournament title since 2008 but did qualify (and win a game in) the WNIT last season after winning 19 games.
That being said, the Eagles only returned one player from last year’s squad and are still working out the kinks among an almost entirely new roster, having not won a game as of this writing against a Division I opponent.
Player to watch: Khila Morris, G, Sr.
After mostly being a reserve option off the bench last season for Troy, Morris made the switch to CSU in the offseason and has quickly emerged as the focal point of Mosley’s offense.
Unfazed by the strong nonconference competition that the Eagles have faced this season, Morris is averaging 14.6 points per game through five contests, notching 23 points on the road at Penn State on Nov. 12 on an efficient 9-for-14 shooting. Morris is additionally a pest on the defensive end, tallying five steals in Coppin State’s lone win of the season over D-II Lincoln (Pennsylvania) while simultaneously flirting with a double-double (16 points, eight rebounds).
Florida State Women’s Basketball Preview
There was bound to be an adjustment period for the Seminoles after the departure of guard Ta’Niya Latson, who transferred to South Carolina in the offseason after a stellar career in Tallahassee that included being a three-time First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and leading the nation in scoring (25.2 points per game) last season.
FSU’s three defeats this year, including one to powerhouse UConn, aren’t cause for alarm, but the ‘Noles are definitely a team still trying to figure out its identity with multiple fresh faces in prominent roles — but many of those new names are showing plenty of promise.
Player to watch: Pania Davis, C, Jr.
Stellar at the junior college level in each of the past two seasons, even garnering a triple-double last season for New Mexico Junior College, the 6-foot-6 Australian has immediately established herself to be one of the ACC’s premier interior presences going forward and should be a difference-maker at the Coconut Hoops Classic.
Davis has never played more than 26 minutes in a game thus far in her FSU career, yet is still averaging 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for the Seminoles through six matchups, garnering her first Division I double-double on Nov. 12 against Nicholls (13 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks).
Gonzaga Women’s Basketball Preview
The Bulldogs saw a seven-year NCAA Tournament streak snapped last season despite winning the West Coast Conference regular-season championship, but Gonzaga basketball is rarely on the downswing for too long.
The Zags’ 2-3 record to start the season may cause alarm on the surface, but they’ll enter the Coconut Hoops Classic as one of the most battle-ready teams in the field following losses to a trio of unbeaten teams with previous pedigree (Colorado State, Stanford, South Dakota State). Trust in the Bulldogs to figure it out, as they’re likely to be just fine both in Florida and beyond.
Player to watch: Lauren Whittaker, F, R-Fr.
Gonzaga has three double-figure scorers plus a former UConn player (Ines Bettencourt), but no one has been making more moves this season in a Zags uniform than the redshirt freshman big man from New Zealand. Whittaker has been on fire to start her college career and is set to be the next in line across a decorated crop of international players to wear the Bulldogs’ uniform, averaging 16.2 points and pulling down 8.2 rebounds per game despite only averaging 22.6 minutes of action a night.
She tallied the first of what could be set to be many double-doubles in her career against the Jackrabbits on Thursday night, scoring 15 points with 13 boards.
Indiana Women’s Basketball Preview
Coach Teri Moren once again has something good cooking in Bloomington. The Hoosiers have made a school-record six straight NCAA Tournaments, started the season 5-0, and even have a win against a fellow team in the Coconut Hoops Classic field (Florida State), setting the stage for what is likely to be another strong year from IU.
The deep ball has been a particular point of emphasis so far for the Hoosiers as they’ve been strong both shooting (36.5%) and defending (20.5%) from 3-point range, with three different double-figure scorers leading the charge on a nightly basis.
Player to watch: Shay Ciezki, G, Sr.
After three seasons of steady production at a cumulative 11.7 points per game with Big Ten Conference programs — spending her first two years at Penn State before transferring to IU ahead of her junior season — Ciezki has finally capitalized on the breakout potential she’s shown throughout the past three years.
The New York native is averaging 21.2 points per game across her first five contests, including a high mark of 35 against Illinois Chicago on Nov. 7, while shooting a blistering 46.2% clip from deep, hitting seven 3s for a season-best against the Flames.
Iowa State Women’s Basketball Preview
Can the Cyclones finally break through and capture their first regular-season Big 12 Conference title in 26 years after placing in the top four in the league in six of the past seven seasons? If there was ever a year for ISU to break its drought, it might be this one. Now in his 31st season as head coach, Bill Fennelly’s women are once again destined to push for a conference championship, and maybe more, and those hopes have gone according to plan so far with the Cyclones starting 6-0 and none of those victories coming by fewer than 27 points.
Player to watch: Audi Crooks, C, Jr.
Seemingly, every year comes a new sensation in women’s college basketball that cannot be ignored if she shows up on your screen. This season, the early favorite to take that title is Audi Crooks.
Though Crooks has been one of the nation’s best bigs for two seasons now, the 6-3 heartbeat of the Cyclones has especially garnered attention for being on a historic pace to start this campaign, averaging 25.7 points per game on an almost beyond-belief 74.4% field goal percentage. Her performance against Valparaiso on Nov. 12 in particular features one of the most efficient stat lines you’ll ever see: 43 points on 18-for-23 shooting with seven rebounds in just 21 minutes.
Marquette Women’s Basketball Preview
Picked to finish second-to-last in the BIG EAST preseason poll a year ago, Marquette instead defied expectations and won 21 games under first-year coach Cara Consuegra, who earned well-deserved Co-BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors.
Now, there are fewer teams that are sleeping on the Golden Eagles this time around. At 4-1 with a win over in-state rival Wisconsin heading into the Coconut Hoops Classic, Marquette has the rare luxury of roster continuity as all five starters are back from a year ago, putting it in a prime position to utilize its experience to potentially return to the NCAA Tournament after missing out in 2025.
Player to watch: Skylar Forbes, F, Jr.
Though the Canadian has started a bit slowly compared to last season, when she had a breakout campaign and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, Forbes’ talent cannot be denied, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her be among the best individual performers at the Coconut Hoops Classic.
Forbes was a do-it-all menace all around the court for the Golden Eagles a season ago, averaging 15.8 points and 5.9 rebounds and breaking the school single-season record for blocks, all while also leading Marquette in 3-pointers and being one of the top 10 free-throw shooters in the country at 90.9%. Still averaging 12.0 points per game this season, all it will take is a couple of big performances this season to be reminded of what Forbes brings to the table.
Missouri State Women’s Basketball Preview
One of the most decorated mid-major women’s basketball programs in the country, with two Final Four appearances to its name, Missouri State has embarked on a new challenge this season as the Lady Bears bolted the Missouri Valley Conference for Conference USA in the offseason.
Winning the conference regular-season title last year in their final season in the MVC, MSU isn’t the favorite in the CUSA but is back to winning ways in preparation for the league slate, starting the year 5-0 with hopes to potentially pick up a pair of wins over Power 4 schools at the Coconut Hoops Classic.
Player to watch: Kaemyn Bekemeier, G, Jr.
Bekemeier had a very defined role in her first two seasons in Springfield, not starting a game for the Lady Bears but making the most of her time on the floor as she captured the MVC Sixth Player of the Year award last season.
The junior has now shifted to the starting lineup this year, and she hasn’t missed a step. Bekemeier is averaging a double-double through five games to the tune of 16.6 points and 10.2 boards per night, notching a season-high in scoring in MSU’s season opener earlier this month against Saint Louis with 23 points as she’s handled the increased responsibility in the Lady Bears’ setup with flying colors.
Oklahoma Women’s Basketball Preview
If the Associated Press Top 25 holds, the Sooners will be the highest-ranked team (No. 8) coming down to the Coconut Hoops Classic and a unit worthy of your attention both in the tournament and throughout the rest of the season. OU made a run to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 12 years last season and returned three major starters from that group, on top of nabbing the nation’s No. 1 overall high school recruit and Gatorade National Player of the Year in guard Aaliyah Chavez.
The Sooners faltered in an early nonconference test against a fellow Final Four contender in UCLA, but expect OU to pick up some marquee wins down the line, especially as one of the frontrunners in a brutal Southeastern Conference.
Player to watch: Raegan Beers, C, Sr.
An All-SEC First Team pick and former All-American, Beers’ choice to return to Norman for the 2025-26 season was a massive decision that instantly catapulted the Sooners back into Final Four conversations.
Thus far, the Colorado native is once again playing at an All-America caliber, reaching the 20-point threshold in four games with four double-doubles to boot as she’s averaged 17.8 points and 9.7 rebounds in the low post, shooting an efficient 64.6% from the field on top of it all. What’s more, Beers is putting up those numbers despite barely playing over a half of basketball per night (20.8 minutes per game) as she’s maximized her minutes and once again became one of the most lethal forces in the interior in all of women’s college basketball.
