Martin Scorsese and Winona Ryder worked together on the historical drama film ‘The Age of Innocence’ in 1993. The actress talked about the film on a recent episode of the ‘Hot Ones’ podcast, where she shared how happy she was with landing the role. She added that “It was like the role of a lifetime. It’s a beautiful movie. A gorgeous movie.”

While talking about her chemistry with her co-star Daniel Day-Lewis, Ryder shared that something that helped her do one of the more intense scenes properly was due to Scorsese’s note. She further revealed that he had given her some instructions on a note, which really helped her get into the character the film needed and complete the take.The note, as per the actress read, “‘Kiss him twice.’ When we’re in Paris and I basically destroy his plan.”There was a scene where Lewis’ character, who was in love with Ryder’s character’s sister, was attempting to go see her. In a bout to stop him, this note from Scorsese helped the actress nail the role. She further added, “It was such a perfect note because I kind of kissed him to end [his inquiry]. I guess they say it’ll put a button on it, but it really changed the dynamic. ‘Kiss him twice,’ It was just like, ‘No, this is the way it’s gonna be. I gave you a f****** out. You didn’t take it. So from now on shut the f**** up.’ You know what I mean?”

Premise of ‘The Age of Innocence’

The 1993 film was based on the novel by Edith Wharton from 1920, and followed lawyer Newland Archer as he had gotten engaged to young socialite May Welland. Things take a turn for the worse when he ends up falling in love with May’s cousin, Ellen. What makes matters even worse is the fact that everyone around them, including May, is well aware of his actions.
