Noah Schnapp was far from the first to know about the major moment his character would have in Stranger Things season 5.
The 21-year-old actor, who has played Will Byers on the Netflix series since he was 11, has always played a pivotal role in Hawkins, as Will’s disappearance into the Upside Down in season 1 started it all. In volume 1 of season 5, which premiered on the streamer on Nov. 26, Will learned just how connected he is to Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and his demogorgons: he can telekinetically destroy the monsters by channelling Vecna’s powers.
Schnapp didn’t actually learn about the major twist for his character, though, until the rest of the cast did. “I remember the scripts being written the year prior, and Shawn Levy and some of the directors not telling me explicitly,” he told Variety.
He was “explicitly” kept in the dark “because they never trust me with any of the information,” he revealed.

When he finally got the pages and read episode four, where the full extent of Will’s connection to Vecna was revealed, he said he “wanted to tell everyone I knew.”
“And of course, I had to wait two years for anyone to see it. But: coolest thing ever.”
Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer has confirmed that, despite Will’s newfound powers — and the ending scene of vol. 1 mirroring how Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) powers often manifest —he’s “not a new Eleven.”
“That was important to us,” Matt told Entertainment Weekly. “In fact, he doesn’t really have powers himself. He’s channeling Vecna’s powers. Because he’s, since season 1, been connected to him and, in part, connected to the Mind Flayer, that is allowing him to tap into and use these powers if he’s in close enough proximity.”

Co-creator Ross Duffer told the outlet, though, that they’ve been sitting on Will’s connection to Vecna since season 2. “We’ve been trying to lay the groundwork for years,” he said.

Schnapp had a similar reaction to the finale of the series. He told PEOPLE that the script for the last episode, which drops on Dec. 31, is “unbelievable.”
“I remember I had people texting me before the scripts came out, like, ‘Noah, watch out. You’re going to like this season.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, whatever, whatever.’”
It wasn’t until the day before the table read, he said, that he read the script — in a surprising place. “I was reading it in the shower, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ [I was] calling my mom, ‘Oh my God, you have to read it,’ and freaking out. I was skimming it as I was getting ready in the shower.”
Volume 1 of Stranger Things season 5 is now streaming on Netflix. Volume 2 drops Dec. 25 followed by the finale on Dec. 31.
