Boulder and Longmont could see historically late first snowfalls this weekend

After a historically long wait for the winter season’s first snowfall in Boulder County’s lower elevations, people in Boulder and Longmont may see their first flakes since April on Friday.

Expect between 1 and 3 inches starting Friday evening, according to Accuweather. Snow is expected to last through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. If the snow does indeed fall and stick, it will be the latest first snow on record in both Boulder and Longmont, according to official weather records.

Both Boulder and Longmont held the same latest first snow record until this year: Nov. 17. With a Friday snow, that record will be officially beaten by 11 days.

It will have been 216 days since Boulder’s last snowfall, and 224 days for Longmont, as of Friday.

Boulder’s snowfall records date back to 1948, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Longmont’s stretch back to 1990, according to Longmont’s Dave Larison, a local retired NWS meteorologist.

This year’s first snowfall was delayed due to a high-pressure system which gripped itself tight over Colorado, as Boulder County residents waited for a Pacific cold front to come in and push the bizarrely warm weather out.

Now, it seems Mother Nature has allowed the expected brisk temperatures in; it will be below freezing the whole weekend in both Boulder and Longmont, according to Accuweather.

On Saturday, Boulder is forecast to see a high of 28, and Longmont should see a high of 30 degrees, according to Accuweather. On Sunday, the cold weather should continue, with Boulder bracing for a 26-degree high, alongside Longmont’s high of 29.

Both cities are forecast to see lows in the low teens by Sunday morning.
