‘Stranger Things’ star Joe Keery on why he officiated wedding as Steve

‘Stranger Things’ recap ahead of season 5
Catch up on “Stranger Things” before season 5 with key plot twists and epic showdown details
Last month, a video of “Stranger Things” star Joe Keery dressed as his fan favorite character on the Netflix series surfaced on social media — not from the set of Season 5, but from a real-life wedding he officiated.
On a Nov 27 appearance on “The Tonight Show,” the 33-year-old actor gave some much-desired context as to why he donned Steve Harrington’s iconic Scoops Ahoy ice cream uniform from Season 3 for the California ceremony.
The indie singer, who also goes by his stage name Djo, said his friends Matt and Veronica got married while he was on tour and suggested he show up in character. He said he wasn’t the only one, adding that the wedding was Halloween-themed and others wore costumes resembling characters from Shrek to the Riddler.
“Veronica was like, ‘I think it’d be great. It’s a costume wedding. It’s Halloween. You should go as (Steve),'” he told host Jimmy Fallon. “I mean, it looks like I just did this for two random people. These are my friends! There’s a bunch of people in costumes.”
He also confirmed that “Stranger Things” costume designer Amy Parris lent him the actual uniform from the show, shutting down speculation that he had bought a knockoff costume.
“It was a little tighter this time around, I gotta be honest with you,” he added. “The shorts didn’t fit quite the same.”
Joe Keery wanted to change the Scoops Ahoy look
Keery also revealed a conversation he had with “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer over the Scoops Ahoy uniform during the filming of Season 3.
The actor suggested that as the season progresses, and his character is invading a secret Russian lair alongside co-worker Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), parts of their uniform would come off.
“I kind of had thought, you know, we’re in the action, there’s Russians we’re fighting, we’re in an underground lair and stuff… shouldn’t I take off the blouse part? Maybe the handkerchief? I could lose the handkerchief,” he said. “And the Duffer Brothers (said), ‘Oh, no, no, no — I think you should keep the whole thing. It’s a look. The whole thing is a look.'”
While the mall ice cream parlor uniform never returned on the show, both Keery and Hawke reprised their beloved characters in Season 4 and Season 5, which dropped its first four episodes on Netflix Wednesday, Nov. 26.
Fans can binge the next three episodes when Netflix releases “Volume 2” on Christmas, Dec. 25. The series finale will come out on Netflix (and theaters) on New Year’s Eve.
