Set against the backdrop of the Texas oil industry, Landman has quickly become another breakout hit for producer and co-creator Taylor Sheridan, now in its second season on Paramount+. Following the success of Yellowstone, Sheridan once again brought in an Oscar-winning lead, Billy Bob Thornton, and Landman’s Billy Bob Thornton brings a grounded authenticity to the series thanks to his commitment to researching the world of oil field workers. The show blends the high-stakes business of oil with the personal stories of the people who live and work in that world, giving it the same gritty realism that has become Sheridan’s signature.

While promoting the new season, Thornton opened up about the extensive preparation he undertook for the role. He explained that he already had some familiarity with the corporate side of the oil industry, but what truly surprised him were the stories of the workers on the ground. Many come from challenging or overlooked backgrounds, taking on dangerous, physically demanding jobs that offer second chances and opportunities they might never have found elsewhere. Thornton noted that understanding those personal histories added depth to his performance and changed the way he viewed the culture surrounding the oil fields.
