New York Islanders forward Kyle Palmieri helped his team by setting up a goal on his way off the ice after tearing his ACL during the Islanders’ 4-3 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.

Palmieri fell to the ice in pain in the second period after getting tangled up with Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale.

Play continued, and it took a while for Palmieri to stand before he skated slowly toward the bench as the puck went to the other end of the ice.

But as he approached the bench, the puck came back in the Flyers’ zone, and Palmieri, moving slowly, stole it from Flyers defenseman Emil Andrae, who was skating backward and taken off guard.

Palmieri passed to Islanders forward Jonathan Drouin, who fed Emil Heineman for his 10th goal of the season.

After the goal, Islanders players celebrated by pointing toward Palmieri, who was heading down the tunnel to the dressing room with the assistance of trainers.

The team said later that Palmieri would not return to the game due to a lower-body injury. On Saturday, the team announced that Palmieri will be getting surgery to repair an ACL tear in his left knee and will be out for six to eight months.
