Championship chances: WKU Football’s path to host CUSA title game

WKU Football has positioned itself in the thick of the Conference USA title game race with just one game remaining in the regular season.

The potential to host the CUSA Championship Game remains on the table, but so does the possibility of missing out on the game altogether. With three teams gunning for just two spots, one team will be left out.

The Hilltoppers travel to Jacksonville State on Saturday with the winner hosting the CUSA championship game. A Hilltopper win would set up the first CUSA Championship Game at Houchens-Smith Stadium since 2016.

If the Hilltoppers fall in Jacksonville they are eliminated.

“All I care about is controlling your destiny,” Head Coach Tyson Helton said. “You want the ability to be in this game to try and go be in the championship.”

If the Gamecocks lose, they need a little help from Kennesaw State. The Owls travel to Liberty on Saturday, needing a win to clinch a spot in the title game. If the Owls lose, Jacksonville State will clinch a spot regardless of the result of their game.

A Hilltopper loss allows Jacksonville State to host the championship game for a second straight year. The Owls would travel to Jacksonville for the game, clinching the second spot. If WKU defeats Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State defeats Liberty, then WKU will host the Owls. A Hilltopper win and Owl loss brings Jacksonville State back for a matchup in Bowling Green.

The formula for WKU is simple; win and you’re in.

The CUSA Championship Game matchup will be decided by Saturday night around 6 p.m., as both games will kick off within an hour window.

Kickoff for the Hilltoppers is set for 1 p.m CT.
