BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) is recalling tens of thousands of Qin Plus DM-i hybrid sedans in the Chinese domestic market due to potential output power limitations caused by power battery issues.

The new energy vehicle (NEV) maker is recalling a total of 88,981 Qin Plus DM-i sedans effective immediately, according to an announcement published today on China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.

The move follows BYD’s recall of 115,783 Tang and Yuan Pro EVs in China last month, highlighting increased scrutiny of its vehicle quality after years of rapid growth.

The latest recall encompasses two batches: 52,890 Qin Plus DM-i sedans produced between September 26, 2021, and September 23, 2023, and 36,091 units manufactured between January 7, 2021, and September 30, 2022.

Some vehicles within this recall scope may experience limited power output from the battery pack due to consistency issues during production.

In extreme cases, pure electric mode operation may become unavailable, posing a safety risk, according to the announcement.

The recall initiative was conducted under the SAMR’s defect investigation.

BYD will authorize dealers to upgrade the vehicle diagnostic software via OTA technology for affected vehicles. When the software detects battery abnormalities, the dashboard panel will illuminate the battery fault indicator, prompting users to return to dealerships for free battery pack replacement.

BYD’s previous recall occurred on October 17, involving 115,783 Tang and Yuan Pro EVs produced as far back as 10 years ago.

The recalled Tang vehicles posed a risk of pure electric drive mode failure, while the Yuan Pro faced potential battery water ingress, according to the announcement at the time.

From January to October, BYD sold 3,701,852 vehicles, marking a 13.88 percent year-on-year increase, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

BYD retained its position as the top BEV seller in the third quarter with a 15.4 percent global share, though sales declined compared to the second quarter.
