UVA fans prep for Tech game, say they ‘know better than to expect a win, but we got to win’

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The Virginia Cavaliers will play their last in-season home game Saturday, November 29, at Scott Stadium against arch-rival Virginia Tech.

It’s a matchup the Hokies usually dominate, but UVA fans are liking their odds this year and feeling the excitement. Tickets started at $105 and are up to $146 for upper deck only on the eve of the game.

UVA fans say this is the most excited they have been for the Commonwealth Clash in years.

Many walking the Corner Friday told 29 News they’re desperate for a Commonwealth Clash win. For Cavalier fans, it’s a pivotal moment in an almost unrivaled season.

“The season’s been amazing. That vibe of we actually might win feels great,” Joana Silva said.

“We’ve got a great team and the expectations are high. We got to go in and get a win,” Nathan Colberg, a UVA fan said. “I know better than to expect a win, but we got to win.”

All that stands in UVA’s way between ACC Championships and a path to the College Playoffs is Virginia Tech.

UVA head coach Tony Elliott said history cannot repeat itself this year.

“We have to carry the burden of what hasn’t been done in the past, and we have the opportunity to change the future,” Elliott said.

UVA Athletics did not reply to attempts made by 29News to get a final count on ticket sales, but high turnout is expected. Elliott hopes to see seas of blue and orange inside Scott.

“We need the crowd to show up and be loud. We’re anticipating that we’re going to get their best effort, their best focus, their best attention to detail in this game,” Elliott said.

UVA’s fan base has higher hopes than years past.

“If UVA is going to beat Virginia Tech, this is our year to do it,” Ben Spranzo, who lives in a split UVA and Tech household, told 29News.

Elliott said that excitement will play big in helping the Cavaliers win.

“I think the crowd has evidence of their impact on the game in several of the games that they’ve caused some havoc,” Elliott said. “Knowing the importance of the impact that it has beyond just the Saturday that you play it.”
