ACC school fires head football coach after rivalry game loss

California has fired head football coach Justin Wilcox, the school announced Sunday.

The move comes a day after the Bears lost 31-10 to arch-rival Stanford to fall to 6-5 this season. The Cardinal was 4-6 coming into the game.

“I want to thank Justin for all of his contributions to our football program, our athletic department and our university,” general manager Ron Rivera said. “He has always comported himself with class and professionalism. After careful consideration, we believe the time has come for new leadership. We wish Justin the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Wilcox went 48-55 in nine seasons at Cal, but has not finished with a winning record since 2019. The Bears began this season 5-2, but have lost three of their last four.

Cal finishes the season at home vs. SMU next Saturday night. Senior offensive assistant Nick Rolovich, the former head coach at Washington State and Hawaii, will direct the Bears for the remainder of the season.

Cal is the 14th FBS program to make a coaching change in this cycle, a list that also includes Stanford and Virginia Tech in the ACC. The Hokies hired former Penn State head coach James Franklin last week.
