Triple Eight boss Jamie Whincup fumes at ‘pretty grubby’ act after Supercars leader clipped in Grand Final

Jamie Whincup has slammed a “pretty grubby” act that flipped the Supercars Championship on its head after leader Broc Feeney was clipped on the first lap of the Adelaide Grand Final and pushed to the back of the pack.

Triple Eight’s Feeney was in second at turn six before contact was made by Ryan Wood, who is out of championship contention but a teammate of Chaz Mostert, who is in contention.

Feeney spun out and rejoined from second last.

“This is a giant game-changer,” Neil Compton said on Fox Sports.

On the team radio Feeney was heard saying “mate, what the hell was that? Seriously.”

Whincup – the Triple Eight team boss – was unhappy.

“My thoughts are, a non championship contender getting involved in the championship really,” he said on Fox’s coverage.

“Yeah there’s hard racing but he was having a free swing and we’ve paid the ultimate price for it. There’s still a lot of racing to go but it’s pretty grubby stuff.”

Another replay showed Wood had bumped the wall and then went into Feeney.

Wood’s team were then shown celebrating triumphantly when the move happened.

Mobil1 Optus Racing’s Ryan Walkinshaw saw the incident completely different to Whincup.

“I think he should be talking to his driver, he very clearly had Woody alongside him and he pushed him into the wall,” he said.

“You can actually see Woody go into the wall and then he went into Broc … Woody can’t exactly just disappear so it’s entirely Broc’s fault and that’s pretty clear and evident from what you can see on TV.”

Wood was given a 15-second penalty for the incident by the stewards.
