Police swarm town centre after ‘serious incident’

Police have rushed to a town centre following reports of a serious incident. Greater Manchester Police said two men have been left seriously injured following an incident in Altrincham in the early hours of this morning.
The leafy town in Greater Manchester – famous for it’s bustling artisan indoor food market – is near some of Cheshire’s wealthiest villages and boasts boutiques, independent shops and grammar schools.
Police said they were called shortly after 3.20am to reports of a disturbance on Railway Street.
Two men have been left seriously injured – one suffering life-threatening injuries and the other, life-changing injuries.
One male has been arrested and remains in custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing.
Greater Manchester Police have said the incident is believed to be isolated anbd reassured the public that a large number of officers remain in the area.
The north west England-based force said on Sunday morning: “Officers are currently responding to a serious incident in Altrincham town centre.
“We were called shortly after 3:20am to reports of a disturbance on Railway Street in Altrincham town centre with two men suffering serious injuries.
“Emergency services have attended and taken the two males to hospital. One is being described as life-threatening, with the other described as life changing.
“One male has been arrested and remains in custody for questioning however enquiries are ongoing.
“Police would like to reassure the public that this incident is believed to be isolated, and a large number of officers are in the area. Businesses in the local area are likely to be affected whilst officers conduct enquiries.”
Traffic monitoring site, Inrix, has reported that Stamford New Road is closed as a result of the incident.
They said: “A538 Stamford New Road in both directions closed due to police incident from Regent Road to Altrincham Interchange.”
