Cold temperatures, risk of winter weather are in Maryland’s forecast

Temperatures continue to tumble tonight as cold air blows into Maryland. A breeze will make it feel like it’s in the teens and 20s overnight, into early Sunday morning. Clouds will hang-on through the evening. A few snow flurries cannot be ruled out. Bundle up if plans bring you out and about.

A greater risk of winter weather and more cold are in the extended forecast.

Cold weather for Thanksgiving, Baltimore Ravens game

Winds will be out of the west to northwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts reaching up to 20 MPH through the evening; a bit lighter than earlier in the day.

The Baltimore Ravens game this evening will feature January-like cold. The 8:20 p.m. kick-off temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s with a mostly cloudy sky.  As the game wears on, clouds will thin a bit and temperatures will continue to drop. It’ll be around freezing in many areas by the end of the fourth quarter.

Thankfully winds will also begin to ease by halftime through the rest of the game. If you’re headed to the game, bundle up.

Even colder, windier weather arrives Black Friday

Friday begins with temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s. It’ll feel like it’s in the teens and lower 20s when the wind blows. Temperatures only top-out in the upper 30s and lower 40s Friday afternoon, with gusty winds. There will be a mix of sun and clouds. A few snow flurries are possible across the Baltimore metro. Snow showers are likely in the mountains of western Maryland and across southern Pennsylvania.

There won’t be any accumulation, locally, but some wind-blows flurries are possible through late afternoon. The sky clears even more and temperatures tumble after sunset on Friday. Temperatures bottom-out in the low to mid-20s away from the city early Saturday morning; upper 20s in town.

Saturday afternoon will be spent in the low to mid-40s, with quite a bit of sunshine and a calmer wind. Saturday is the pick day of the weekend.

Light wintry mix, rain showers develop on Sunday

Clouds will quickly thicken across Maryland Saturday night, ahead of our next storm system.

A light wintry mix will develop across western Maryland early Sunday morning. A light wintry mix is expected to expand into central Maryland and the Baltimore metro heading into the mid-morning hours.

Any light wintry mix would come in the form of a few wet snowflakes and/or sleet pellets, mix with the rain.

Temperatures will be above freezing, so roadways will remain wet. Any mixing should be brief and focused mainly north and west of Baltimore City. A cold rain takes over late Sunday morning, into the afternoon with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s. This will cause slower-than-normal traveling, especially with all of the extra holiday traffic.

This is why the WJZ First Alert Weather Team has tagged Sunday as a possible First Alert Weather Day. Showers will continue into Sunday evening before tapering off before sunrise Monday. Rainfall totals should remain light between 0.20″ and 0.40″.

A winter storm will impact portions of our region next week.

The workweek begins with dry, mostly sunny and chilly weather on Monday.

The next storm the WJZ First Alert Weather Team is closely watching arrives late Monday night into Tuesday morning. This storm appears to have a greater potential of delivering winter weather to parts of the region in the form of snow, sleet and ice. The track and strength of the storm will determine how much of our area receives winter weather… and exactly how much falls. As of Thursday evening, areas north and west of Baltimore City have the greatest chance of accumulating snow and/or ice. Though, the entire area has a least some chance of seeing snow and ice on Tuesday. There are also indications that the wintry mix may eventually change over to rain, even in our colder suburbs north and west of Baltimore.

While there is a great deal of uncertainty about this storm’s specific track and strength, along with possible impacts, the threat is great enough that the WJZ First Alert Weather Team has tagged Tuesday as a possible First Alert Weather Day

Please check back with our team through the holiday weekend as details about the storm and its possible impacts become clearer.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Cutter
