San Antonio strong cold front on the way; Weekend weather whiplash

SAN ANTONIO – Enjoy today’s warmth and higher humidity if this is your preferred weather this time of year. A strong cold front is on the way with weekend weather whiplash set to unfold.

Weather impacts from strong cold front

The cold front is way up in North Texas heading south at a steady pace. Ahead of this front, temperatures are already punching into the 70s with a mix of clouds and sun. There will be a small chance of a shower or thunderstorm in our eastern zone counties this afternoon.

The front arrives first in the Hill Country then into the San Antonio area near or after 11PM. As it moves in, it will try to develop a few showers or even a thunderstorm in and around Bexar County but the coverage looks more isolated. Further east, this front will develop widespread showers and storms. There is a marginal severe storm outlook in place for wind and hail in our eastern zone counties.

These showers and storms will spread south with the front and move out of our region deep in the night. Some areas in our eastern half of the area could see 1″ or more of rain from this.

Winds will switch to the north behind the front and strengthen as the colder air is rushing in. Wind gusts through the night will range from 30 – 40mph and a gust or two over 40mph remains possible. These windy conditions will be with us through Sunday morning then weaken to breezy afternoon conditions.

Wind chill temperatures will range from the low 30s to around 40 in and around Bexar County. The Hill Country will see wind chill temperatures in the 20s.

Sunday turns out to be a cloudy day and dry. An area of low pressure will develop off the Texas coast while an upper level disturbance pushes toward our region Sunday night to Monday. This will develop patchy rain in our region late Sunday night through some of Monday. This will keep temperatures cold to chilly Monday. If this patchy rain develops Monday, a general .01″ – .50″ rainfall will be possible.

As for freeze potential, we will need to monitor Monday night to Tuesday morning trends on cloudiness. If skies clear early enough into Monday night, temperatures will fall well into the 30s. It’ll be close and worth keeping an eye on if looking to protect plants.
