Chelsea vs Arsenal preview
Mikel Arteta hailed Bayern Munich as “the best team in Europe” after Arsenal’s 3-1 Champions League victory over the German giants on Wednesday.
Four days later, Arteta’s men take on world champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues hammered ten-man Barcelona 3-0 on Tuesday.
A run of five wins in six league games has propelled Chelsea up the table and a home victory this weekend would cut Arsenal’s lead to three points.
Liverpool’s collapse and Manchester City’s inconsistency mean that Enzo Maresca’s Blues are regarded as a serious threat to title favourites Arsenal and the draw looks the best bet on Sunday.
Maresca confirmed on Friday that Cole Palmer – “our best player” – will return after a stubbed toe but Chelsea have coped well without the England ace.
Estevao continued his excellent first season in England with a stunning goal against Barcelona while Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto are also playing with swagger in front of midfield generals Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea are certainly heading in the right direction but they have been helped by a fairly soft start to their league schedule. Five of their wins came against teams who began the weekend in the bottom six and the other two were narrow victories against out-of-sorts Liverpool and Tottenham.
Beating Arsenal will be far tougher although the Gunners lost 1-0 at Liverpool in August and needed a late equaliser at home to Manchester City in September.
The Gunners have been irresistible at the Emirates Stadium, thrashing Tottenham 4-1 before inflicting a first defeat of the season on Bayern, but they have scored only eight goals in six away league matches.
Two of those goals came in this month’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland, who were good value for their injury-time equaliser, and this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash may also end all-square.
Golden boy Rice holds key to Gunners’ chances
Arteta was asked about Declan Rice’s Ballon d’Or chances after another outstanding display from the England midfielder against Bayern.
Martin Zubimendi’s arrival has unlocked the attacking potential of Rice, who has 12 goal involvements in his last 22 starts for club and country and scored in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in October 2023.
Chelsea’s Fernandez underrated in goalscorer market
Rice isn’t the only all-action £100m midfielder on show at the Bridge and Chelsea’s Fernandez is an eye-catching price in the first-goalscorer betting.
He had two early efforts disallowed against Barcelona on Tuesday, having scored his fourth league goal of the season at Burnley last weekend, and his tally of 11 shots on target is more than any other Chelsea player this term.
