Ignace man wins $2.1M hospital 50/50 prize

Dennis Wilson got the good news while on his way shopping.

IGNACE– An Ignace man is a multimillionaire, thanks to the Thunder Bay 50/50 draw.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation president and CEO phoned Dennis Wilson on Friday morning to give him the news of his $2.1-million win.

He caught Wilson on his way to Dryden to do some shopping.

“Do you know who’s calling?” Craig asked.

“You’re kidding,” responded Wilson, who said he’s has been playing the hospital 50/50 since the beginning.

“I always thought it was a win-win situation when you buy the ticket and hopefully you didn’t have to use the other part by going to the hospital,” Wilson said.

Wilson said he plans to pay off some bills and help his son pay to finish off his cabin.

Wilson is not the first Ignace resident to become a millionaire thanks to the 50/50. Another local man, Norman Barratt, took home a $1.1 million grand prize in the September 2023 draw.

Tickets for the December 50/50 jackpot, which last year reached $6.4 million, are on sale now at www.thunderbay5050.ca. They can also be purchased at the Foundation storefront at Intercity Shopping Centre.
