When Scotstown and Newbridge took to the pitch at Healy Park, Omagh last Sunday to contest the Ulster Club Senior Football Championship semi-final, they little thought that what happened — or rather what did not happen — would be highlighted all over the island.

Monaghan champions Scotstown had been hoping to make a breakthrough and do their county proud in the final having come so near and yet so far to success in recent years while Newbridge, having won back-to-back Derry titles, had harboured hopes that they might just flourish on the day.
