It’s time for Basketball: Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

The Spurs road trip continues in Minnesota, where the Timberwolves beat the Celtics 119-115 last night With a 39 point scoring burst from Anthony Edwards. Ant wasn’t the only key performer for the Wolves, they got solid performances from Julius Randle and Donte DeVincenzo, who led the team with 8 assists.

The Spurs are coming off of one of their best performances of the season [Personal note: that’s something I’ve said more than once, which is a good sign] in a 139-136 group-clinching performance over the Denver Nuggets. Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie led the way for the good guys, but you can’t forget the solid performance from Keldon Johnson coming off the bench. Usually role players don’t play as well on the road as at home, but the Denver game was an outlier for that stat, as every player on the Spurs exceeded expectations, and even guys like Carter Bryant, who has been quite raw at times, had some solid minutes in the Mile High city.

The Spurs can’t afford a letdown against the T’Wolves, who have been a bit inconsistent this season, but seem to be hitting their stride a month into the season. Although the official injury report has not yet been submitted at the time this article has been written, it’s expected that Minnesota will have all of their players available, and the Spurs are still missing Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle from the lineup. It will be interesting to see if Vassell can build on his performance against the Nuggets and Fox can bounce back after scoring a sub-par (for him) 15 points against the Nuggets. These games are going to be tough as the Spurs keep trying to grind out wins to keep pace in the West until Victor and Stephon return. After tonight’s game, the Spurs return home for a single game against the Grizzlies on Tuesday, then go back out on the road to face the Magic, Cavaliers, and Pelicans—followed by a trip to Los Angeles to face the Lakers in their opening game of the NBA Cup knockout tournament. That’s a real murderer’s row of road games [except for the Pelicans] so we’ll find out a lot about how well things are going with Mitch Johnson’s leadership during the stretch. It’s possible that Castle and Wembanyama could return at some point in that string of game, which could make the NBA Cup tournament much more interesting.

Game Prediction:

Rudy Gobert will attempt a slam dunk which misses badly, and the rebound will bounce out to halfcourt for a breakaway dunk by Keldon Johnson.
