Google rules out Christmas Island data centre as AI race heats up with Gemini capability gains

Tech giant Google will push back decisions on building local data centre infrastructure to power its artificial intelligence and cloud computing services until next year, refuting reports it is planning a big facility on Christmas Island.

Google’s Gemini AI service has made big capability gains in 2025, with the release of its third model this month surprising the market by surpassing the latest offerings by OpenAI and Anthropic on almost all benchmarking tests.
