The career timeline of new Auburn football coach Alex Golesh

The Alex Golesh era has begun at Auburn football.

Auburn athletics department made the move on the former USF coach Sunday morning, and he is set to be the Tigers 33rd head coach in program history.

Here’s a full timeline of Golesh career at Auburn that’s led to his hiring.

2004-2005

Golesh began his career at Ohio State as a student assistant under then coach Jim Tressel. During his time with the Buckeyes, Golesh worked with the defensive line alongside Jim Heacock.

2006-2007

Golesh served as the graduate assistant at Northern Illinois.

2008

Golesh served as the graduate assistant at Oklahoma State.

2009-2011

Golesh was hired as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Toledo in 2009 working under Tim Beckman, who he also worked under at Oklahoma State as a defensive graduate assistant. During his time at Toledo, Golesh secured back-to-back #1 MAC recruiting classes in 2010 and 2011.

2012-2015

Golesh followed Beckman to Illinois in 2012, working once again as the tight ends coach, recruiting coordinator, running backs coach and special teams coordinator in his three years with the Fighting Illini.

2016-2020

Golesh was hired as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Iowa State in 2016 under Matt Campbell, who he worked with at Toledo. He helped land four consecutive top-50 recruiting classes to the Cyclones.

2020

Golesh was hired as a co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at UCF in 2020, working under Josh Heupel. This stop where Golesh studied and learned Heupel’s tempo-based offense.

2021

Golesh followed Heupel to Tennessee as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in 2021. When Heupel took the Tennessee job in 2021, he made a crucial decision. Heupel gave Golesh primary play-calling duties and in his first year the scoring offense jumped from #108 nationally to #7.

Oct. 15, 2022

Golesh led Tennessee to 385 yards of total offense in the Volunteers 52-49 upset victory over Alabama. In that season, Golesh once again led the Volunteers to their best offense in school history, finishing as the top ranked offense in the nation with 46.1 points per game.

Dec. 4, 2022

Golesh was hired as USF’s sixth head coach, inheriting a program that had gone 4–29 over the previous three seasons. In his first year, Golesh led the Bulls to a 7–6 record, including a victory over Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl—marking the program’s first bowl win since 2017.

Sept. 6, 2025

Golesh led USF to an upset 18-16, as the Bulls totaled 391 yards of offense that led to USF’s 20-yard game-winning field goal. Golesh capped off by a 9-3 season in 2025 with the Bulls prior to agreeing to terms with the Tigers.

Nov. 30, 2025

Golesh was named the 33rd head coach at Auburn.
