Strong winds are expected Sunday in Hamilton and surrounding areas and may result in utility outages, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The federal weather agency issued a special weather statement just after 9:30 a.m. for Hamilton and Burlington. It has also issued a wind warning for Niagara and St. Catharines, and a snowfall warning for Brantford.
For Hamilton and Burlington, beginning later this morning, strong southwest winds with gusts of 60 to 70 km/h are possible.
“Local utility outages are possible,” the statement says.
The strong winds will begin easing in the evening as they become more northwesterly, Environment and Climate Change Canada said.
In Niagara and St. Catharines, Environment and Climate Change Canada said strong southwesterly winds gusting to 80 km/h and up to 90 km/h are expected for areas along the Lake Erie shores.
“High-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Some property damage is possible,” the weather agency said.
Additional 5 cm of snow expected in Brantford
Meanwhile, people in Brantford should expect an additional five centimetres of snow on Sunday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada said the snow will ease near midday and transition over to scattered flurries, which may mix with rain showers.
The weather agency said travel will likely be challenging.
“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will likely be reduced at times,” it said, adding that people should allow extra time for travel.
