JCPS proposes start time changes for 2026-27 school year

JCPS superintendent Yearwood lists closing schools
JCPS superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood lists the schools that will be closed, consolidated and relocated in the district.
Jefferson County Public Schools is proposing a plan to move all school start times up 20 minutes earlier, JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan confirmed in a Nov. 21 statement to The Courier Journal.
According to Callahan, Superintendent Brian Yearwood will add a recommendation to adjust start times for the 2026-27 school year to the agenda of a Dec. 9 meeting with the Jefferson County Board of Education. She added this is a “major topic” Yearwood has heard about from principals and staff.
Right now, JCPS has three different start times: 7:30, 8:40 and 9:40 a.m. Under the proposal, the start times would be adjusted to 7:10, 8:20 and 9:20 a.m.
This proposed change comes a day after JCPS announced a plan to close, consolidate and relocate multiple schools ahead of next school year, as part of an effort to achieve more than $100 million needed in cuts. That proposal is also expected to go before the school board on Dec. 9.
