Darwin Nunez Liverpool chapter closed in August when the Uruguayan sealed a move to Al-Hilal in a deal worth around £46m plus add-ons, signing a contract through to 2028.

After three unpredictable but eventful years at Anfield – 40 goals in 143 appearances and a Premier League winner’s medal.

It was bittersweet for many Reds fans, who understood that the club needed to go in a different direction but also sad at losing his infectious personality and some of the moments he brought in a Liverpool shirt.

So far, the Uruguayan’s time in the Saudi Pro League has been going well, with five goals and two assists in 11 appearances so far under manager Simeone Inzaghi.

However, despite the bright start to life in Riyadh, it seems that the ex-Liverpool man could be on the move sooner rather than later.

Argentina outlet Ole have reported that Nunez is looking to make a switch away from Al-Hilal so soon after signing.

Riverplate’s 2025 campaign that has left their Copa Libertadores fate humiliatingly dependent on arch-rivals Boca Juniors.

As a result, the Argentina giants are preparing a massive squad overhaul for 2026.

With Marcelo Gallardo’s side lacking firepower, the club hierarchy has reportedly approved a war chest exceeding R$ 100 million (approx. $17 million) to secure elite reinforcements.

And it is claimed that Nunez has been offered to Riverplate as part of this remodeling, with the 26-year-old himself reportedly “intending to leave Al-Hilal.”

Gallardo is said to be “keen” on the forward, with the suggestion being that the Millonario could explore a loan deal as they don’t have the financial muscle to buy him outright.

While River Plate’s 2026 budget is still awaiting final approval from the board, the club’s leadership has already made significant progress in projecting how much money president Stefano Di Carlo’s regime expects to spend on new transfers for the massive squad rebuild required.
