Chris Davies says Birmingham City are already holding discussions about improving their squad in the January transfer window.

Blues brought 11 new players to the club in the summer – and Davies says they have the scope to add to that when the window opens in a month’s time.

Six permanent deals were secured as well as five loan players – the maximum that can be fielded in a match-day squad.

Players are also expected to leave next month and Davies told BBCWM Sport: “Those conversations are well under way. Obviously it’s very important to plan early, so those conversations are well underway.

“We really get into that with even more focus in the coming days and weeks, because obviously it’s a critical window for us to get right.

“We feel we’ve done well in the three windows since I’ve been here. There’s always movement and I think this one’s going to be a really important one for us.”

Davies was asked if the owners will further invest in the squad, or whether players will also have to be shipped out.

He continued: “I believe so, I believe there’s a combination of both of that. I don’t know the exact figures and the details.

“I think we’ll get into that as time goes along, but I think the one thing is for sure that it will be a critical window of opportunity for us to make sure that we come out of that window stronger than we went in.”

Blues named a 24-man squad for the first half of the season – and hope to have long-term absentees Scott Wright and Lee Buchanan fit again for the second part.

Championship clubs are allowed to keep 25-man squads that must include at least eight homegrown players. Blues named 15 last time, including returning academy product Demarai Gray and captain Christoph Klarer who spent part of his development at Southampton.

Players who have yet to make an impact or are on the fringes of the squad include Alfons Sampsted, Kanya Fujimoto, Eiran Cashin and Jack Robinson.
