California Weather Alert: Frost Advisory & Sneaker Wave Risk for Eureka Until 9AM

EUREKA, CA — Northern California wakes up to a cold, calm start as a Frost Advisory and Beach Hazard Statement remain in effect early this week. Temperatures have dropped into the 30s inland, with frost blanketing lawns, windshields, and coastal fields. At the same time, the Humboldt and Mendocino coasts face an increased risk of dangerous sneaker waves through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Eureka.

Residents from McKinleyville to Arcata are urged to cover sensitive plants and protect pets from frost-related damage. Morning lows around 36°F are enough to harm tender vegetation or create slick patches on bridges and shaded roads. For those heading out early, leave extra time for visibility and traction issues.

Meanwhile, along the coast, large, unexpected waves may surge farther up the beach without warning, pulling debris and unsuspecting visitors into the surf. Meteorologists caution that calm seas can be deceptive — sneaker waves often strike after 20–30 minutes of quiet surf. The strongest threat extends along the Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino County coastlines through Tuesday at 8 a.m.

By Tuesday afternoon, skies will remain mostly sunny with highs near 56°F, warming slowly through midweek. Dry weather holds through Thursday, with clouds increasing by Friday as early December’s next Pacific system begins to organize offshore.

5-Day Outlook (Eureka, CA):

  • Monday: Frost early, mostly sunny, high 57°F.
  • Tuesday: Sunny, high 56°F.
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high 58°F.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, high 60°F.
  • Friday: Increasing clouds, chance of rain late, high 57°F.
