Tyrann Mathieu Is Suddenly a Potential Eagles Option for Safety Woes

The Philadelphia Eagles have obvious concerns in the secondary with rookie safety Andrew Mukuba having been placed on IR and Reed Blankenship nursing an injury of his own. While Blankenship is expected to be fine, there is one starting spot that remains in question with Mukuba gone and Sydney Brown not having the type of resume that gives much faith in the backup being capable of stepping into a starting role. With this in mind, Philly fans can’t help but pay attention to Tyrann Mathieu’s latest comments.
After retiring ahead of the 2025 season, it seems there is a level of regret for the star defender. Mathieu appeared on Up and Adams, talking about the impressive recent run from the Houston Texans’ defense. In the clip, Mathieu offered, “Man, listen, I’ll come back to play for a defense like that.” Then Adams followed up with “Are you ready to come back?” Mathieu further opened the door, saying, “For the right situation, who wouldn’t. I love this game.”
It is important to note that Mathieu would have a road back to prove himself capable after missing the bulk of the season. Still, GM Howie Roseman can’t ignore the possible fit after Mukuba’s injury.
Eagles Could Find Surprise Secondary Answers in Recently Retired Safety Tyrann Mathieu
Roseman finding a way to coax Mathieu out of retirement to help patch together a young secondary would be on brand for this front office. There is no denying that, even at this stage of the defender’s career, he appears to be an obvious upgrade. Having Blankenship and Mathieu working together gives the Eagles a safety net with a far higher ceiling.
For Mathieu, the reasons to come back are simple, with the Eagles offering a chance at a second Super Bowl run. The safety won the 2020 Super Bowl while playing with the Kansas City Chiefs and would appear in a second Super Bowl against Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This is exactly the type of experience that the Eagles could benefit from as they attempt to fix the current defensive concerns and defend last season’s championship.
Entering the 2025 season, the secondary was lacking experienced players on the outside with C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Darius Slay in the offseason. While neither player is having a stellar 2025 season, the lack of a veteran presence has been obvious throughout the Eagles’ season.
Leading to yet another reason for Roseman to attempt to talk Mathieu out of retirement and into aiding Philly’s attempts to defend a title that remains very much up for grabs. With the Kansas City Chiefs imploding this season and the NFC remaining wide open, it seems for the first time in recent memory that league control is very much up for grabs. This should add a further sense of urgency for the Eagles to address an obvious issue at safety by bringing in Tyrann Mathieu.
