Warm temperatures could stave off snow in Vancouver forecast, but for how long?

The Vancouver forecast for December is out, and the weather is going to stay wet and warm to start the most festive month of the year.

According to Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) meteorologist Derek Lee, the first half of the month is looking to be warmer than usual, with no sign of snow for the city.

However, a cooling trend may be on the way before the end of the year.

“The pattern becomes harder to predict in the second half of December,” Lee told Daily Hive. “We may see lower temperatures than normal and a cooler trend by the end of the month.

“There is a possibility that this trend continues in January. La Nina is pretty weak at the moment, so there could be a delay in when it starts.”

The Vancouver forecast for the first week of December is calling for plenty of rain, with a daytime high of up to 9˚C on Saturday and Sunday and a low of 2˚C on Tuesday night.

ECCC

ECCC’s Canadian Climate Normals Data shows that the daily average temperature in December for Vancouver is 3.9˚C. The month averages 155.8 mm of rainfall.

“December is looking like it may possibly be wetter than normal, but it’s hard to say if it’s rain or snow. Same for January,” explained Lee. “The lowest that snow may fall is 700 metres, and only at times.

“Local mountains may see snow caused by storms, but warmer weather will soon wipe that away. So unless we get a cold snap coming down from the mountain, we won’t see much snow.”
