Long-haul flights return to Canberra, but there’s a twist

Canberra Airport saw the return of long-haul international flights today as Qatar Airways resumed daily services between the nation’s capital and Doha. The catch, however, is that ACT-Qatar flights will be operated via Melbourne in both directions.
The restart restores a key link for Canberrans heading to the Middle East, Europe and beyond, and expands Qatar Airways’ Australian footprint to six cities, joining Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne.
The airline will operate the service with its Boeing 777 aircraft, connecting travellers through Hamad International Airport in Doha to more than 170 destinations.

Onboard, passengers can expect the carrier’s usual cabin lineup, including Qsuite Business Class, along with free high-speed Starlink wi-fi across all cabins. Qatar Airways is currently the only carrier offering Starlink connectivity to and from Canberra.
“We are delighted to return to Canberra and once again, serve Australia’s capital city,” Qatar Airways Group CEO Mohammed Al-Meer said.
“This milestone represents our continued commitment to the Australian market and to connecting communities across the world.
“Whether travelling for business, government service, study, or leisure, we look forward to welcoming passengers from Canberra back on board and providing them with the world-class services Qatar Airways is renowned for.”

Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron called the return “a game-changer for international travel”.
“It restores a vital link for over a million people across the ACT and southern NSW, while opening the door to global opportunities for business and tourism,” he stated.
Yesterday, Qatar Airways launched its third daily service between Melbourne and Doha, flights it operates for Virgin Australia.
KARRYON UNPACKS: Canberra hasn’t had a long-haul option since before the pandemic. But the fact that the flights operate via Victoria tempers the excitement, even if just a little. Despite this, the new service adds more choice and sharper fares to the Middle East and beyond – especially for Canberrans. Qatar Airways’ partnership with Virgin Australia adds another bonus, making domestic connections smoother for ACT travellers.
