Parents Oppose JCPS Plan to Close or Consolidate Schools

Parents in Jefferson County are voicing strong opposition to the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) proposal that aims to close or consolidate multiple schools. This plan, which was unveiled recently, has resulted in heated discussions among parents and educators regarding its potential impact on students.

Details of the JCPS School Consolidation Plan

Under the proposed plan, the JCPS district intends to make several significant changes to its school operations. The specific schools targeted for closure include:

  • Liberty High School
  • Zachary Taylor Elementary

Additionally, the plan outlines the moving of Waller-Williams Environmental and TAPP, along with merging King Elementary into Maupin. The district’s administration claims that the decisions were based on a “Facility Profile Index,” which assesses schools by their condition, operating costs, and enrollment status.

Parent Reactions and Concerns

During a recent meeting, parents expressed their frustrations directly to Dr. Brian Yearwood, the JCPS Superintendent. They emphasized the negative effects these closures could have on their children. Michael Thomas Sr., a concerned parent, articulated this sentiment by questioning the motives behind the plan: “Why are you messing with our children?”

Parents are particularly worried that the proposal—projected to save approximately $4 million—will not benefit their children, as expressed by parent Jill Camuel. Former board members have also criticized the timing of the feedback meetings, stating they are too brief and inconvenient for families.

Upcoming Meetings and Board Review

JCPS has scheduled two additional feedback sessions to gather parent opinions:

  • Date: December 2
    Time: 5-6 p.m.
Location: JCPS Center for Professional Learning
  • Date: December 3
    Time: 5-6 p.m.
    Location: Academy @ Shawnee

All the accumulated feedback from these meetings will be documented in a report for the school board. Ultimately, the board will make the final decision regarding the plan during a vote scheduled for December 9.

The ongoing debate around the JCPS school closure plan underscores the community’s commitment to ensuring favorable conditions for their children’s education. With a projected $188 million budget shortfall, the district faces tough choices that will significantly impact the local educational landscape.
