Want to catch the last supermoon of 2025? Here’s what to know

Santa arrives in Old Town Square Fort Collins on a fire truck

Crowds cheered as Santa rode a Poudre Fire Authority fire truck into Old Town Square Fort Collins on Nov. 28.

The last supermoon of the year is coming, and Colorado happens to be a great place to view it from.

The December Cold Moon — the third and last in a series of consecutive end-of-year supermoons — is set to rise starting around 4 p.m. Dec. 4 in Fort Collins, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. As the last supermoon of the year, it comes just before the peak of the Geminid meteor shower Dec. 13 and 14, meaning “exceptionally” dark skies fit for stargazing, per the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Due to its high elevation, Colorado is among the top five states to view the Cold Moon from, according to Action Network’s Supermoon Visibility Index.

Why is it called the Cold Moon?

Full moon names are traditionally rooted in Native American culture as well as Colonial American and European traditions, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. June’s Strawberry Moon gets its name from the Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota peoples, who historically harvested strawberries that month. July’s full moon is called a Buck Moon because July is the time of year when the antlers of bucks are in full growth mode and the Cold Moon gets its name from December’s chilly weather, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

What were the full moon names in 2025?

Per the Old Farmer’s Almanac:

  • January: Wolf Moon
  • February: Snow Moon
  • March: Worm Moon
  • April: Pink Moon
  • May: Flower Moon
  • June: Strawberry Moon
  • July: Buck Moon
  • August: Sturgeon Moon
  • September: Corn Moon
  • October: Hunter Moon
  • November: Beaver Moon
  • December: Cold Moon
