Joelinton feels the ‘sky is the limit” for Newcastle United teenager Lewis Miley after he made his presence felt against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Miley weighed in with an assist and a goal against the Toffees to underline his potential and after being handed an opportunity ahead of Sandro Tonali, he gave Eddie Howe a real headache going into the next run of matches. Two years ago, Miley burst on to the scene as a raw kid from the Academy but then suffered injury woe.
With that behind him, he is beginning to get close to the early potential shown and he looked unflappable in midfield alongside Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. Howe now has a dilemma over the youngster with competition strong.
Joelinton told Chronicle Live: “Lewis is a great player, and also a great guy. Every time he steps on to the pitch he shows his qualities.
“He is a very mature young player with a lot of potential. So the sky is the limit for him. I am very happy for him. He scored, and it was also a great performance from him.”
Joelinton put in a commanding performance in midfield with the Brazil international delighted to see Newcastle finally show their clinical side. The Magpies have struggled to build on good starts away from home in recent matches, but blew Everton away with three goals in the first half.
Joelinton said: “It was a really good victory for us, it is a difficult place to come. Everton had been in form, but we played really well with the ball, without the ball.
“We deserved to win. When we had the ball, we were calm, and we created a lot of chances. And we took them. In the last few games, we have been forced to create more to score just one and have not been taking them.
“Everton was different; we took them. It was very important that we got the first win away from home in the Premier League of the season.
“That’s back-to-back wins now. And we are back at home on Tuesday against Spurs, and we are looking for another big performance.”
With Spurs and Burnley on Tyneside this week, United have the opportunity to cement a place in the upper half of the table. Despite rocky away form, they have stayed in contention due to a solid sequence at St James’ Park.
The players know the chance is there to push on, having produced a great run of results this time last year, and with competition for places strong in the squad they must be on their toes.
Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar all missed out on a start at the weekend, while the midfield options saw Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey make an impact from the bench in the second period.
Joelinton added: “We want to go on a run now. The table is really tight and we know with a few wins we will be right back up there. That is our focus and that’s our goal. I hope we can deliver again on Tuesday.”
“The strength in depth is strong. Everybody is competing for their place. At Everton the guys come in and help the team in a difficult moment. They all played well and I was very happy to everyone who started the game, and those who came on.”
