Mississippi football will have its offensive coordinator for its College Football Playoff run after all.
Newly named LSU football coach Lane Kiffin announced in a statement on Tuesday, Dec. 2, that the Tigers will allow Charlie Weis Jr. to finish out his stint as the Rebels’ offensive coordinator before starting with the Tigers.
Mississippi confirmed Weis Jr. will be on Pete Golding’s postseason staff with a graphic on the program’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“With the playoff committee releasing updated rankings tonight, I wanted it to be known that after conversations with LSU, we are allowing Charlie to return to Ole Miss to coach the team during the playoffs,” Kiffin said in a statement. “I’ve already made the committee aware of this, and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that. I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help.”
Weis Jr. was one of several members of Kiffin’s Ole Miss staff who were on the plane with him on Sunday, Nov. 30 from Oxford to Baton Rouge. He will hold the same title as offensive coordinator at LSU under Kiffin, marking the fourth program he will work for Kiffin, with the others being Alabama, FAU and Ole Miss.
Kiffin, of course, was denied requests to coach Mississippi in the playoffs upon his acceptance of the LSU job.
According to the Daily Advertiser, part of the USA TODAY Network, Weis Jr. agreed to a three-year, $6 million deal. He is expected to make $2.1 million in 2028.
Weis Jr. joined Kiffin’s staff at Ole Miss in 2022, and has served as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since.
The Rebels enter the penultimate College Football Playoff at No. 7 in the CFP top 25 rankings, and are currently projected to host a CFP first-round home game in Oxford.
