Ritz recall issued in eight states after packaging mix-up

EAST HANOVER, New Jersey — Mondelēz Global LLC announced a limited voluntary recall Monday of a single product line of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches distributed to eight U.S. states, citing a labeling error that could pose a risk to people with peanut allergies.
The company said 70 cases of the product were inadvertently shipped to select retailers in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Alabama. Although the outer cartons were labeled correctly, the individual snack packs inside may be mislabeled as the cheese variety despite containing peanut butter.
Mondelēz said the recall is not an expansion of a July recall involving the same product line and two code dates. The company stressed that the step was taken “out of an abundance of caution.”
According to the company, the affected product is the 27.6-ounce Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches 20-count carton (Retail universal product code 44000 07584 2) with Best When Used By dates of Jan. 8 next year or Jan. 15 next year, and an “AE” plant code printed on the top of the package.
No illnesses or injuries have been reported, the company said, and no other Ritz products are involved.
Consumers with a peanut allergy are urged not to eat the product and to discard any affected cartons. Questions can be directed to Mondelēz at 1-844-366-1171, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern. The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Mondelēz said corrective actions are underway after the labeling mix-up was discovered internally.
