Several children injured after bus roof ripped off in low bridge crash

Several children have been left injured after a bus had its roof ripped off as it travelled under a low bridge.

The double-decker bus collided with a low bridge on Spendmore Road in Coppull near Chorley at around 12:30pm on Wednesday 3 December

Officers said “a number of children suffered injuries” in the collision which are “thankfully thought to be relatively minor at this time”. They are currently being assessed by paramedics.

Lancashire Police said all the passengers have been safely taken off the bus and the road remains closed.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at just after 12.30pm today to a report that a school bus had struck a bridge on Spendmore Lane, Coppull. Emergency services are at the scene, and a road closure is in place, while we deal with the incident.

“The passengers have been safely taken off the bus. A number of children suffered injuries which are thankfully thought to be relatively minor at this time, and they are being assessed by paramedics.”

Spendmore Lane is currently closed from the junction of Lancaster Street to Regent Street to due to the collision.

The force added: “We anticipate that the road will be closed for some time, whilst we assess the situation. In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route and driving carefully, leaving plenty of extra time to get to your destination.”
