Liverpool vs Sunderland preview
November was a pretty miserable month for Liverpool but they ended it with a more than a suggestion that they might have turned a corner.
The Reds have spent months trying to find the right balance but they had a more solid look during Sunday’s 2-0 victory at to West Ham and they can produce a similar performance and outcome against Sunderland at Anfield.
Arne Slot is an attack-minded manager but took a more pragmatic approach at the London Stadium as he focused on ending a run of three straight defeats.
Mohamed Salah was an unused substitute and Joe Gomez came in at right-back, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to play in a more advanced position and affording Florian Wirtz the freedom to express himself in an attacking midfield role.
And the changes had the desired impact as Liverpool started on a solid footing before growing into the game and securing a well-deserved three points.
Salah’s exclusion was arguably long overdue and has raised questions over his future role in the squad.
But Slot’s focus should be on the team rather than individuals, whatever their status, and he seems likely to go with a similar set-up in the short term as he strives to push Liverpool up the table.
Despite Liverpool’s miserable run of nine losses in the last 13 games, they have plenty to play for.
Slot’s side finished the weekend nine points adrift of Arsenal and only three behind Chelsea, who have been touted as potential title challengers.
Getting into the top four will be their first priority and one of the teams they need to overtake are Sunderland, who are performing beyond all expectations.
The Black Cats remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light and their never-say-die attitude was on show against Bournemouth at the weekend when they trailed 2-0 after 15 minutes and came back to record a 3-2 victory.
Regis Le Bris’s side went toe-to-toe with Bournemouth in a thrilling end-to-end contest.
But they have had a different look on their travels and were far too passive in their last away match, a 1-0 defeat at Fulham where they lost the shot count 24 to four.
Sunderland delivered by far their best away performance on their October visit to Chelsea where they played front-foot football and were rewarded with a superb 2-1 victory.
However, they have scored just three times on their top-flight travels and could be comfortably contained by a more focused and organised Liverpool side.
Alderete could add to his card collection
Omar Alderete was shown plenty of cards during his time in La Liga and he has started to get into the bad books of Premier League referees. The Paraguayan defender has been booked twice in his last three Sunderland appearances.
Reds can show their resilient side
Liverpool have looked defensively vulnerable for large parts of the season but they had a much more resilient look during Sunday’s victory at West Ham. They kept a clean sheet at the London Stadium without allowing any shots on target and can shut out Sunderland.
Liverpool vs Sunderland Bet Builder
Alexander Isak to score at any time
Strikers usually thrive on confidence so it would be no great surprise to see Isak add to the goal he scored at West Ham on Sunday.
Reinildo to commit over 1.5 fouls
Reinildo always seems to be in the thick of the action and looks a solid wager to commit multiple fouls on Merseyside.
Virgil van Dijk to have an attempt on target
Sunderland will have plenty of crosses to defend and may struggle to contain Virgil van Dijk, who can at least test the reflexes of visiting goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
