Hobart to reach 28 degrees as severe wind warning issued for Tasmania’s east

Parts of central and eastern Tasmania can expect strong winds on Thursday, with gusts of up to 100km/h possible.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the north-east, east coast, Central Plateau and parts of the upper Derwent Valley.

Northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h are forecast from Thursday morning.

St Helens, Swansea, Bicheno, Bothwell, Fingal and Tarraleah are among the areas that may be affected.

An approaching cold front is behind the conditions.

“The cold front will move into the Tasman Sea by late Thursday evening with winds easing in its wake,” the bureau said.

Winds should ease below warning thresholds during Thursday afternoon for central areas, and by late evening in the east.

Another front is expected on Saturday, bringing showers and the chance of snow to 800 metres.

Hobart is forecast to reach 28 degrees on Thursday under mostly sunny skies.
