Royals period drama perfect for fans of The Crown now streaming on Netflix

Netflix audiences seeking another royal series to fill the void left by The Crown have a new option to get their fix.

Victoria, the three-season drama originally aired on PBS Masterpiece, is streaming on the Netflix platform and offers a detailed look at the rise of Queen Victoria, the ruler who preceded the modern era’s most recognizable monarch.

The series follows Victoria, who came before Elizabeth II, during the young queen’s earliest and most formative years. Starring Jenna Coleman, known for her role on Doctor Who, the show blends historical storytelling with character drama.

The story begins in 1837, when 18-year-old Alexandrina Victoria unexpectedly ascended the throne after the death of her uncle, King William IV.

Although several male relatives were once ahead of her in the line of succession, all died without legitimate heirs, leaving Victoria as the only remaining option.

Reviews from viewers and critics suggest that the show could be a new favorite. One review states, “Victoria is worth your time, whether you adored Downton Abbey or not, and through the very hard work and dedication of Britain’s ITV has delivered PBS another gem to which you might devote your Sundays.”

Another notes, “The series does a wonderful job at revealing the growing pains and subsequent transformation of Victoria from a teenage queen to a grown-up queen in the span of a short time.”

Fans also mentioned the acting, saying, “Very charming show and Jenna Coleman is magnetic.”

One fan reinforced the similarities between Victoria and other classic favorites. “What it’s given us is something…that will be good enough for those still eager to fill the Downton Abbey-sized hole in their TV-watching hearts.”
