Scott McTominay sends clear Man United message as Napoli star makes special statement

Scott McTominay was named Serie A Player of the Year at the Gran Gala del Calcio awards on Monday night and the former Manchester United midfielder has sent a clear message

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has won the Serie A Player of the Year award.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay appears to harbour no regrets whatsoever regarding his departure from Old Trafford. The Scotland international delivered a 13-word declaration following his triumph at Monday evening’s Gran Gala del Calcio awards, where he claimed the Serie A Player of the Year accolade.

“Coming to Napoli was an easy choice, I came to the right place,” he said upon receiving the honour, according to The Sun. McTominay proved instrumental in Napoli’s Serie A championship triumph last term, netting 13 goals whilst providing six assists across all competitions under Antonio Conte’s guidance.

His outstanding displays at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium earned him the Serie A MVP gong for the 2024-25 season.

McTominay’s maiden campaign away from Old Trafford proved remarkably successful, with that momentum continuing into the current term as he helped his nation secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking at the award ceremony on Monday evening, the former United star spoke passionately about his unique connection with Napoli following his 2024 transfer.

He said: “It’s sensational, it’s incredible to be here and win this award. Thank you to everyone, the team, the staff, and my teammates. My bond with Napoli is special, there are so many special places here.”

The 28-year-old, who registered 255 appearances for United whilst finding the net 29 times, also earned selection in a prestigious Serie A team of the season.

Current Manchester City midfielder Tijani Reijnders received recognition in the squad alongside Inter Milan duo Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco. United fans have been questioning the choice to offload McTominay following his superb beginning to his Italian adventure, with the club securing merely £25million from his transfer.

Former United manager Erik ten Hag pointed to PSR compliance requirements as the motivation behind the midfielder’s exit.

“He was so important for our team,” Ten Hag said. “He was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it’s the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sales, and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value.

“It’s not the right thing to do but, for everyone, for all parties, it’s a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it.

“Of course, for Napoli. (They are getting) a very good player. But also for us (it’s a good deal too).”

Nevertheless, the reported £25million agreement now appears a steal for Napoli and McTominay would have been a perfect fit for Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation. McTominay will return to action with Napoli in the Coppa Italia encounter against Cagliari on Wednesday evening.
