Joe Thomas Reflects on Panic Attack Captured in Inbetweeners Film Bloopers

One of the stars of the iconic series “The Inbetweeners” recently opened up about a particularly challenging moment during the filming of the franchise’s first movie nearly 14 years ago. Joe Thomas, who portrayed Simon Cooper, revealed that he experienced a “breakdown” that was inadvertently captured on camera for a DVD blooper reel.
The film, which was released in 2011 as a follow-up to the popular E4 series that aired from 2008 to 2010, became a cultural touchstone for many fans. In a recent episode of the “Joe and James Fact Up” podcast, Thomas recounted a moment of “panic” he faced during filming, a struggle that his co-star James Buckley described as “unfairly” becoming part of a DVD extra.
During the podcast, Buckley recalled the incident, saying, “Joe’s having a panic about something… and he goes, ‘Sorry, can I just have 10 seconds?’ He gets 10 seconds, and then goes, ‘Well, that did absolutely nothing.’” Thomas explained that he often needed small breaks to gather himself while filming, using phrases like “it will take about six or nine seconds, can I just… I can’t do it.”
Reflecting on the pressures of making the series, Buckley noted that while they considered it “the best job in the world,” there was significant stress involved in trying to be consistently funny. Thomas echoed these sentiments, stating that feeling an obligation to deliver humor but failing to do so was one of the toughest experiences he faced.
