Emergency warnings issued as ‘out-of-control’ bushfires threaten Tasmania and Victoria

Residents in two Australian states have been urged to evacuate immediately as out-of-control bushfires threaten areas.
Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) issued a Bushfire Emergency Warning for Glenlusk and Levendale on Thursday afternoon, while Victoria Emergency issued a separate emergency warning for Markwood.
In Tasmania, authorities said an uncontrolled blaze at Glenlusk was moving towards the area bordered by Brinkmans Rd, Faulkners Rd and Molesworth Rd and surrounding properties.

The fire “is expected to put lives in danger and may destroy homes, impacting as soon as now,” the TFS alert said.
“There is expected to be thick smoke, and showers of embers which may cause fires all around you.
“You need to act now to survive.”
The Bureau of Meteorology earlier issued a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds in the area, with gusts of around 100km/h expected to continue through the afternoon, further complicating fire conditions.

In Victoria, authorities said a bushfire “not yet under control” was travelling from the Snow Rd in a south-easterly direction towards Whorouly-Bobinawarrah Rd.
“Don’t wait, leaving now is the safest option – conditions may change and get worse very quickly,” the warning said.
“Emergency services may not be able to help you if you decide to stay.”
TFS said that if it is not safe to leave, residents should shelter in the nearest building, monitor their surroundings closely, and extinguish any spot fires near the property.
