Senne Lammens is beating Gianluigi Donnarumma at his biggest strength, Ineos made the right call

The Manchester United fanbase was split when Ineos chose to sign Senne Lammens over Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

Andre Onana’s form last season made it blindingly clear that Manchester United needed a change of goalkeeper in the summer.

United struck an £18m deal for Senne Lammens, but the decision to sign the young Belgian raised eyebrows at the time because there were strong links to Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Martinez ended up staying put at Aston Villa, while Donnarumma ended up joining United’s rivals Manchester City.

Gary Neville thought United should have signed Donnarumma when he was available, but Lammens has been incredible during his first few months in Manchester.

Senne Lammens is a better shot-stopper than Gianluigi Donnarumma

Donnarumma established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world at Paris Saint-Germain, winning the Champions League and four successive Ligue 1 titles.

He is a proven winner, and according to Opta Analyst, he is one of the best shot-stoppers on the planet, based on his saving stats.

In City’s recent 5-4 win over Fulham, Donnarumma conceded four goals from five shots. It extended what has been a rocky start in Manchester for the Italian.

As pointed out by Statman Dave on X, Donnarumma has only saved 58% of the shots he has faced in the Premier League this season. Only two goalkeepers in the entire division rank lower – one being United’s Altay Bayindir.

In contrast, Senne Lammens has saved 64% of shots faced after making 16 saves in his first seven appearances.

Ineos made the right decision with Senne Lammens

It was a huge risk for United to turn away from two established goalkeepers and instead sign an unproven 23-year-old in Lammens.

United goalkeeping scout Tony Coton pushed for Lammens, and Ineos listened to his advice.

While Amorim wanted to sign Martinez, Ineos stuck with their data-driven approach and put their faith in Lammens.

So far, it seems they got the decision absolutely right. Instead of splashing the cash on Donnarumma and his huge wage demands, United have secured a bargain deal for Lammens.
