Skýra Retreat is a new wellness getaway, hidden within Finnish Lapland

Finally open to welcoming its first guests is Skýra Retreat, an exclusive new destination located on the shores of Lake Norvajärvi, right outside Rovaniemi, Finland.
Founded by Susanne Hulbekkmo, whose commitment to authenticity and wellness informs every nook and cranny, the space—set within a restored 1950s village schoolhouse surrounded by ancient forests—offers one the opportunity to slow down and step into a pace of life guided by nature.

The design
The architectural direction showcases the dialogue between Finnish heritage and modern luxury, drawing inspiration from the mid-century period the school was first established. Brought to life by UKI Arkkitehdit, one of Finland’s best practices, and Design Saarinen, materials and silhouettes evoke both classic and contemporary interpretations of Nordic design, from the understated use of wood to the patterned wallpaper that enliven the spaces.

The stay
As a retreat meant for guests to reconnect with nature and themselves, accommodation is intentionally small. Only four room categories are offered, each shaped by Nordic tradition and modern comfort. At its heart are the Grande Suites, featuring hand-restored log walls, private saunas and deep freestanding bathtubs. There’s even a Champagne button, just because.
Other categories include the Log Suites, each with its own fireplace lounge and views framed by floor-to-ceiling windows; the Teacher’s Chambers, unique apartments that once housed the school staff; and for extra privacy and luxury, the three-bedroom Private Lakeside Villa, located at the water’s edge. Here, one could enjoy sweeping lake views, a lakeside sauna with a direct access to an ice hole, and the option of childcare and a personal chef.

The food and wellness
Chef or no chef, each stay at Skýra Retreat includes an à la carte breakfast and afternoon coffee and pastries. In the evenings, guests may opt for a three-course dinner, a seasonal culinary experience defined by Nordic simplicity, elevated by French technique. Finnish resourcefulness is seen throughout the menu, ensuring nothing goes to waste and that every dish is an expression of place and purpose.
Intentional wellness experiences are also key to the retreat. Your stay will include daily morning flow yoga and even folklore sauna, a ceremonial Finnish ritual with story and spirit. Beyond four complimentary activities, there is plenty more to do, from the classic aromatic oil massage and private violin relaxation to creative writing and love coaching. Guests can also choose to go on an adventure, be it snowmobiling or a reindeer safari.
