Ruben Amorim praises ‘really powerful’ Diogo Dalot, says he is absolutely crucial for the Premier League

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has given his latest verdict on Diogo Dalot.

With Amad and Noussair Mazraoui set to head to the AFCON along with Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United are set to be a little depleted at the wing-back position.

Diogo Dalot has continued to play regularly under Ruben Amorim this season, and he is set to take on an even bigger role with the upcoming tournament departures.

Dalot played his 150th Premier League game for United at the weekend. And Ruben Amorim wants to see more from him.

Ruben Amorim wants consistency from Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot has had an inconsistent season, making errors in the defeat to Brentford and the draw with Nottingham Forest.

Against Crystal Palace, Dalot put in an improved performance, taking the place of Patrick Dorgu on the left.

Speaking to his press conference ahead of the West Ham game, Amorim said: “I think when you see a very good game of Diogo, he can show that he has the quality and sometimes it drops a little bit, but if you look at our team, everyone is a little bit like that.”

Amorim is positive most of all about Dalot’s ability to contribute from set-pieces, defensively and offensively.

He said: “He’s really powerful. He’s good on set-pieces, and you have to understand that in this league, [that] is really important.”

The head coach also praised Dalot’s versatility, before coming back to his point about consistency.

“He can play both sides. It depends on what you want, the system that you are going to face, and to have that ability of playing both sides, changing position during the game, that can help you also, even to think about the squad for the league.

“It’s one player, he’s [an] international, always playing for [the] national team. So, it’s a very important player for us, but he needs to improve like any other player.”

Dalot in the mix to face West Ham

We can expect Amad to start at the right wing-back position against West Ham, but the left side is a little more unclear.

Dalot is probably the favourite to start, with Amorim likely to give him a platform to be consistent, and start two games in a row.

However, Patrick Dorgu is also pushing, and Luke Shaw could become an option at wing-back again too.

Lisandro Martinez’s return from injury boosts United’s options at centre-back, freeing Shaw to help solve a potential wing-back shortage.
