JMU men’s basketball comes back to defeat NC Central, women win at East Carolina

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — Cliff Davis scored eight of his 18 points in the final minutes as James Madison closed on a 13-3 run to beat North Carolina Central 67-62 on Wednesday night.

JMU (6-4), which shot just 34.6%, trailed 59-54 with under five minutes left before Davis tied it at 59 on a 3-pointer and later added another key basket after an Eagles turnover. Gabe Newhof’s layup put the Dukes ahead for good.

Justin McBride added 16 points and six rebounds for JMU, while Eddie Ricks III grabbed seven boards.

Gage Lattimore scored 29 points for NC Central (3-7), which erased an early double-digit deficit but couldn’t hold on late.

The Dukes host Norfolk State on Saturday.

WOMEN: James Madison 83, East Carolina 66

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WHSV) — Peyton McDaniel hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead James Madison past East Carolina 83-66 on Wednesday night in nonconference women’s basketball.

JMU (7-3) shot 50% from the field and used a 30-point second quarter to take control after trailing 19-15 through one. The Dukes outscored ECU 24-9 to close the half and never looked back, holding the Pirates (4-5) to 1 of 10 from deep over the final three quarters.

McDaniel added nine rebounds, while Brianna McLeod provided 12 points and five blocks off the bench. Bree Robinson scored 11 with six assists, and Ashanti Barnes added 10.

Kennedy Fauntleroy led ECU with 17 points.

The Dukes dominated the glass 48-26 and hit nine 3s, their most this season.
