Report: Red Sox to acquire Oviedo in 5-player deal with Pirates

The Boston Red Sox are acquiring right-hander Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a five-player deal that includes outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Boston will receive Oviedo, as well as prospects Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman, while Pittsburgh gets Garcia and Jesus Travieso, sources told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

Oviedo, 27, posted a 3.57 ERA in nine starts for the Pirates last season, striking out 42 hitters in 40 1/3 innings.

Garcia, who goes by the nickname “The Password,” posted a .619 OPS in five games for the Red Sox last season. He impressed in the minors, hitting 21 homers and adding 75 RBIs in 114 contests across two levels.
