Pokémon and Cyberpunk 2077 nab surprising Game of the Year wins

Apple has revealed the winners of its annual App Store Awards. Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket took home the award for iPhone Game of the Year, while Cyberpunk 2077, Dredge, and the Game Awards-nominated Despelote were recognized in the list of winners.

Each year, the App Store Awards celebrate games and apps that were released across Apple’s digital store. Awards are split up into multiple categories, with winners being selected for iPad, iPhone, Mac, and now Apple Vision Pro. 2025’s nominee shortlist included some heavy-hitter games across categories like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Infinity Nikki, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket won this year’s Game of the Year award for iPhone, getting some late recognition after launching on the App Store last November. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition picked up an award for Mac Game of the Year, while Triband’s multiplayer What the Clash? beat out Katamari Damacy Rolling Live to earn Apple Arcade Game of the Year.

This year’s award for iPad Game of the Year went to 2023’s Dredge, which received an iOS version earlier this year. In an interview with Polygon over video call ahead of today’s winners announcement, developer Black Salt Games confirmed that the studio is currently working on a new project. Rather than making Dredge 2, the studio says that it’s working on a dark fantasy game set in an open world next.

In addition to the Game of the Year winners, three games received a Cultural Impact award, celebrating games that “fostered greater understanding and gave users more ways to interact with their communities.” Art of Fauna, Chants of Sennnaar, and Despelote all made the cut alongside a trio of apps.
